We're all little kids just looking for love
Yeah, don't we all just want somebody to love?
-Kacey Musgraves
As Frank and Lissa just taught in their IFS & Memoir “WRITE TO HEAL” class, writing and sharing your story of trauma and healing can be a potent therapeutic self-healing process. Especially if you can revisit your memories safely and gently, with Self present and protectors on board- with an IFS-informed process- the practice of letting your parts write and giving voice and validation to their stories can be a transformative experience.

Once you’ve benefited from getting your story out of your body and onto the page, what’s next? You might just feel inspired to help others who’ve struggled like you have by publishing your story-so your story can help others heal.

That’s exactly what Frank Anderson did. He gave the pen to many parts who got to have their stories and voices witnessed, validated, and unburdened. Not only did working with his parts deepen the story-telling and bring it to life in the writing.
But that wasn’t all. For Frank, the process of writing the memoir also unearthed parts he hadn’t yet worked on in therapy, whic both surprised him and also allowed him to go even deeper into his Self-to-parts relationships.

It’s not every day that a venerated, highly respected Harvard-trained psychiatrist with the worldly credentials Frank has earned as a leader in the fields of traumatology and IFS steps off the pedestal as an expert and dares to share the very raw “moments that made you” the Frank has done in TO BE LOVED. Frank now hopes to normalize the trauma-healing IFS journey by sharing the tender, vulnerable, courageous, and sometimes even shadowy aspects of his true story, which he hopes inspires others who struggle to get the love they need in the world, so they won’t need to pretend life has been easier than it’s actually been and so they can get the help they need to thrive, transform, and enjoy intimacy with their own parts- and with others.

To be loved and love at the highest count
Means to lose all the things I can't live without
Let it be known that I will choose to lose
It's a sacrifice but I can't live a lie
Let it be known, let it be known that I tried

Excerpt from: TO BE LOVED

“You’re not going to school today, Frankie,” said my father.

For another kid, these words might have brought a moment of pure elation. For me, it was a disappointment; I loved my first-grade class. Moreover, being kept out of it was a clear signal that something strange was happening. Louis and Maggie weren’t the sort of parents to have me miss a day of school without a good reason.

It’s not a weekend. We’re not on summer vacation. I don’t feel sick.

 “Why not?” I asked.

Their answer was more confusing than the announcement. “We’re taking you to a hospital downtown for some tests,” said my dad.

Missing school, visiting a hospital in the city rather than our local hospital, my parents’ secretive tone- all this could mean only one thing: I must be sick. Very sick.

Frank Anderson began his literary journey by writing a chapter, “Who’s Taking What? Connecting Neuroscience, Psychopharmacology, and Internal Family Systems for Trauma.”

Never really thinking of himself as an author, he was asked to write another chapter, “What IFS Brings to the Treatment of Trauma,” and shortly thereafter asked to coauthor “The Internal Family Systems Skills Training Manual” which has become an international best
seller.

He then embarked on his first solo book “Transcending Trauma” which was released in 2021, which is the culmination of his professional and personal journey to date.

Frank is a lead trainer and consultant for the IFS Institute, an advisor to the International Association of Trauma Professionals (IATP), and maintain a private practice in Harvard, MA. He is passionate about teaching, enjoys providing therapy consultations and gives trauma informed IFS-related workshops throughout the world.
Lissa Rankin, MD, New York Times bestselling author of Sacred Medicine, The Daily Flame, Mind Over Medicine, The Fear Cure, and The Anatomy of a Calling is a physician, speaker, founder of the Whole Health Medicine Institute, creator of The Daily Flame, a mystic, and a bonafide spiritual bypasser- until she found Internal Family Systems five years ago.

Her latest project is non-profit work committed to eliminating the public health epidemic of loneliness while bringing Sacred Medicine out of its current status as a luxury good for privileged elites and bringing it to anyone who needs it and is open to it, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, or gender identity.
