Module 1: How To Use The Whole Health Cairn

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Anne Davin, PhD

The Whole Health Cairn, a wellness model that was introduced in Mind Over Medicine, serves as the foundation of the perspective you will be taught at the Institute. You will be given practical tools to teach you how to help clients access the Cairn as part of their healing journey. You will also be expected to work through your own Whole Health Cairn with your “practice partner”, and you will be leading your “practice partner” through the process as a way to practice the tools you will be taught.
Kelly Turner, PHD
Module 2: The Six Steps To Healing Yourself Part I:
Steps 1 & 2

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Kelly Turner, PhD

This module teaches Step 1 (Believe you can get well) and Step 2 (Find the right support) of the 6 Steps to Healing Yourself. You will be instructed on how to facilitate a patient’s process as the patient works through these first two steps. Kelly Turner, PhD author of Radical Remission believes that healing is possible at any time and that every situation is unique and everyone requires their own healing plan. She will discuss the results of her research and nine principles of radical remission.
Lissa Rankin, MD
Module 3: Placebo & Nocebo Effects, with Lissa Rankin

Lissa Rankin, MD

This module focuses on how a combination of positive belief and nurturing care can heal not just the mind, but also the physiology of the body. You will be taught the science proving that the placebo effect and its evil twin, the nocebo effect, are not only real, but that their effects are reproducible even without sugar pills. You will also be taught the scientific mechanism by which a combination of positive belief and nurturing care improves health outcomes, while negative belief and poor bedside manner negatively affect health outcomes. As preparation for this module, you will be given an unpublished chapter that was cut from Mind Over Medicine, and a discussion will ensue about the ethics of using placebos in clinical medicine.
Anne Davin, PhD
Module 4: The Six Steps to Healing Yourself Part II:
Steps 3 & 4

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Anne Davin, PhD

This module focuses on Step 3 (Listen to your intuition and trust your body’s wisdom) and Step 4 (Diagnose the root cause of your illness) of the 6 Steps to Healing Yourself. You will be given tools to help facilitate these steps with your clients.
Tosha Silver
Module 5: The Six Steps To Healing Yourself Part III:
Steps 5 & 6

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Tosha Silver

This module focuses on Step 5 (Write your own prescription) and Step 6 (Surrender attachment to outcomes) of the 6 Steps to Healing Yourself. Guest teacher Tosha Silver, author of Outrageous Openness, will teach how Step 6 should really be Step 1. Her teaching focuses on the “how to” of surrender, so we can help our patients do everything within their power to achieve optimal health outcomes, but ultimately, we are not in control, and neither are our patients. In addition to teaching our patients how to create a patient-centered action plan (The Prescription), it is also our responsibility as true healers to guide our patients spiritually and help them learn to let the Divine take the lead in their own lives.
Bruce Lipton, PhD
Module 6: You Are Not A Victim of Your Genes

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Bruce Lipton, PhD

This module focuses on dispelling myths about genetic determinism that you may have been taught during your medical education and proves to you that you and your clients are not victims of their genes. Bruce Lipton will be sharing the findings of his research, which were published in his bestselling book The Biology Of Belief. You will learn how to help your clients improve their health outcomes by shifting their conscious and subconscious beliefs from self-defeating, fatalistic “I am a victim of my genes” thinking to optimistic thoughts that can affect how our DNA expresses itself in vivo.
Steve Sisgold
Module 7: The Body As A Compass

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Steve Sisgold

This module blends “Core Curriculum” with “Heal The Healer,” as guest teacher Steve Sisgold, author of What’s Your Body Telling You? teaches you how to use your body as a compass, guiding your decision-making, both as a doctor and as a patient. Steve’s work also focuses on how our bodies store limiting, self-sabotaging beliefs, and how even if we change our minds, our bodies may betray us unless we release these beliefs from the body. Steve teaches practical tools you can use on yourself, which will also be helpful when you work with clients.
Neha Sangwan, MD
Module 8: The Healing Power Of Healthy Communication

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Neha Sangwan, MD

This module teaches what it mean to be support to someone going through a healing journey, what does it mean to support ourselves, and what does it mean to support others. Communication is a large part of this support. Everyone’s healing journey is unique and may require reprogramming in our communication techniques.
Joan Borysenko, PhD
Module 9: Rewriting Your Life Story Can Heal You

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Joan Borysenko, PhD

This module teaches how your story affects your health and nervous system. Life is a mystery and the power to remove limiting beliefs, and be present to what is, and create meaning in this life comes out of opening up to the reality of love. The stories we tell ourselves can change our brain circuitry, our relationships, and our path through the world. They can elevate life to heaven on earth, or drop us unceremoniously into the fire. This powerful module by the legendary Dr. Joan Borysenko will help you create your personal Tree of Life, explore your life myths, both sacred and profane, harvest the wisdom of deep discontent, use the written word to transform darkness into light, and ultimately change your brain and your life by changing your story.

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Aviva Romm

Depending on whose statistics you trust, somewhere between 38-76% of patients are using complementary and alternative medicine, yet most doctors are not trained to participate as respectful partners with CAM providers. While this module doesn’t teach you to practice any particular CAM modality, it offers you an introduction so you have a sense of who you might refer to in an integrative practice, as well as giving you an opportunity to get a feel for any CAM practice you might wish to become trained to practice as an integrative doctor.

Module 19: Integrative & Functional Medicine

Guest speaker Rachel Carlton Abrams, MD

Patients frustrated with overworked, insurance–based doctors are increasingly seeking cash-based physicians skilled in practicing “integrative,” “functional,” or “holistic” medicine. Yet what does that really mean? This module focuses on clarifying what physicians might offer beyond what patients have come to expect of their insurance-based health care providers. A survey of what physicians who label themselves as “integrative” or “functional” might offer will be taught so doctors interested in these modalities might get a sense of where they desire to seek further education.

Robert Augustus Masters, PhD
Module 25: Spiritual Bypassing

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Robert Augustus Masters, PhD

Especially in spiritual circles, certain emotions deemed to be "unspiritual" often get repressed in ways that can prevent healing. Anger, frustration, resentment, jealousy, grief, and disappointment, for example, may get "spiritually bypassed" with premature forgiveness, neurotic tolerance, blind compassion, and other spiritual bypassing and intimacy bypassing techniques. This talk aims to inspire us to lean into the full range of human emotions in healthy ways, not just as a way to deepen intimacy with each other and with the Divine, but as a way to foster mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual healing.
Gabor Mate, MD
Module 26: When The Body Says No

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Gabor Mate, MD

Physician Gabor Mate, author of The Body Says No, focuses on the effects of emotional repression on the body and how different personality types predispose people to certain types of illness. He views healthy emotional expression as absolutely necessary to the treatment (and prevention) of illness.
Dawson Church, PhD
Module 27: Treating Trauma With Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT or "Tapping") As Medical Treatment

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Dawson Church, PhD

Dawson is a psychologist, researcher, and author of many books who teaches practitioners of EFT (emotional freedom technique). Dawson co-wrote the book Soul Medicine with physician Norm Shealy and has been on the cutting edge of energy medicine long before it became as mainstream as it is becoming. Dawson’s approach to trauma treatment as part of treatment for any ailment is aligned with Lissa’s worldview of what makes the body ripe for miracles and how we can be proactive about doing what we can to co-create an optimally healthy body.
William Bengston, PhD
Module 28: The Energy Cure

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker William Bengston, PhD

Bill, who Lissa just finished teaching with in Paris, wrote a book, The Energy Cure, but mostly Bill is a devoted, hardcore, diligent researcher. For many years now, Bill has been curing cancer in mice by training skeptical grad students with no energy healing experience to do hands-on healing work on the mice’s cages. These methods are curing cancer in people too, including difficult to treat cancers like pancreatic cancer. Bill calls his technique “hocus pocus” and laughs about how silly it all sounds, but it’s working. And now he’s researching how to store healing energy in pieces of cotton or bottles of water so this kind of healing energy could be mass distributed—at very lost cost. He dreams of making conventional cancer treatment irrelevant and defunct. The rabbit hole Lissa found herself diving into continues to baffle her and leave her in awe.
Asha Clinton, PhD
Module 29: Energy Psychology Tools As Potential Cancer Treatment

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Asha Clinton, PhD

Asha is a psychologist, former Princeton professor, mystic healer, and longtime Sufi practitioner who founded Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT), a form of energy psychology treatment for trauma. AIT is working remarkably well for a variety of psychological diagnoses, but what drew Lissa in was how she’s using AIT as primary or secondary treatment for cancer! Asha has trained thousands of therapists in this reproducible technique, and therapists are getting amazing results. Wow.
Richard Schwartz, PhD
Module 30: The Internal Family Systems (IFS) Model As A Physical Healing Tool

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Richard Schwartz, PhD

Lissa digs into what Richard “Dick” Schwartz, PhD is up to with his IFS (Internal Family Systems) therapy work. Dick holds the point of view that physical symptoms or even “accidental” injury can be “protector parts” that are keeping our “exiled parts” safe. Similarly to how she teaches in Mind Over Medicine, Dick has discovered that if you communicate with the symptom or area of pain, it will often reveal to you the root cause of why it’s there and what it needs in order to heal. He’s even doing research to validate his findings, and the early findings with rheumatoid arthritis are really promising and demonstrating that this approach is an evidence-based technique!
Larry Dossey, MD
Module 31: Change the World of Healthcare

Lissa Rankin, MD and guest speaker Larry Dossey, MD

This module focuses on what we as a collective need to do in order to heal our broken health care system. What needs to change externally in the system? What needs to change internally within doctors and clients? What leadership role will you play in being part of the change? Larry Dossey, author of the bestselling Healing Words, proposes what he calls “Era 3 medicine,” and will teach us how we might adopt this evolved perspective in order to become better doctors, transform health care, and step into our roles as leaders of this revolution.
