About LISSA RANKIN, MD
In 2007, when I quit my stable and lucrative – but miserable – job as an overworked, unhappy, chronically ill full-time physician in a busy managed care practice where I was expected to see forty patients a day, I had no idea what the future would hold. My then husband wasn’t employed and I was the sole bread winner.
It wasn’t until about nine months after I quit my job that my calling to serve came back with a vengeance. I sensed that I was being called to step up into some sort of spiritual service, but I had no idea what that would look like or how I was supposed to serve. I just knew that the feeling in my heart was calling me forth, and every cell in my body vibrated with the urgency of what I was being called to do.
I labeled the next two years, which were painful in many ways, my “waiting and becoming” years. This time was filled with a lot of uncertainty and accompanying anxiety, but I comforted myself with the strong intuitive sense that I was being called into something unknown which would one day make sense, even though nothing made much sense at the time. I thought I was supposed to write books, and I spent a year writing a book that I hoped would be my ticket out of debt and my gateway to a new career. But that book got rejected by 30 publishing houses because, although the editors loved the book, the marketing people dinged me for having no “platform,” a term that was foreign to me. That’s when my literary agent said, “Lissa, you have to start a blog.” A blog? I barely checked email and had never even heard of a blog.
But I did my homework, and like a good little doctor following orders, I launched my first blog post in April of 2009. Within three months of starting my blog, I had attracted a large “platform” and been recognized by Forbes, and some of the very same publishers who had rejected my book only months earlier started offering me book deals. My book went to auction, and four publishing houses made offers on it. I started attracting the attention of New York Times bestselling authors, and collaborating with spiritually-inclined visionaries with a desire to change the world. I went on a book tour funded by a large corporation, and I gave lectures at colleges all over the country.
But I still couldn’t pay the bills. My website wasn’t earning any revenue because it was never meant to be a business. I thought writing books would pay the bills, but the book advances I was offered were small, and in order to grow my platform, I had hired staff to help me, so my overhead was quite high. I never even considered leveraging my platform to earn revenue from my blog community, because I had no idea that was even possible. I wound up $200,000 in debt, looking “successful” on the outside, but with a depleted bank account and a dejected spirit. I had never worked so hard and earned so little revenue. Although I had a strong intuitive sense that I was on the right path, there was no clear evidence that I would ever pay the bills. I started to lose hope and question my intuition.
January of 2011 marked the beginning of a very scary time, peppered with many dark nights of the soul. I was full of self-doubt and fear. After finishing my 20-city book tour, turning down my next book deal because the publisher wasn’t going to pay me what I needed to earn in order to cover my family’s bills, losing my literary agent, and deciding to close the integrative medicine practice I had just opened, I felt very frightened. I spent nearly a year in what I called “the narrow place," that place that feels like you’re being squished from all sides, where you’re in a small, tight, uncomfortable place that makes you feel like you can barely breathe. After risking everything to follow an intuitive hunch, it looked like I was going to have to throw in the towel and admit defeat by going back to the hospital with my tail between my legs. From everything I could gather, it looked like I had failed. But I couldn’t ignore the quiet yet ever present whisper inside of me that kept nudging me, saying “Stay the course, sweetheart. You’re about to turn a corner.” My loved ones weren’t so sure, and everyone started thinking I might have lost my sanity.
Then a series of miracles happened.
My book proposal for Mind Over Medicine went to auction and was bought by Hay House for six figures. An invitation to deliver 3 TEDx talks followed soon after, and those TEDx talks have been viewed over 2.5 million times. I co-taught several very successful teleclass programs, and these teleclasses generated six figure paychecks. I also launched several successful “platinum programs. By the end of 2011, everything began to turn around.
In May of 2013, my book Mind Over Medicine hit the New York Times bestseller’s list and wound up getting published in almost thirty languages, in addition to being featured on my PBS special Heal Yourself: Mind Over Medicine. This sudden exposure led to two more six figure book deals, as well as five-figure paid public speaking gigs, requests to lead workshops at retreat centers like Esalen and Kripalu, and the creation of the Whole Health Medicine Institute, a certification program for physicians and other health care providers inspired to participate in healing health care and practicing medicine the way I envisioned in Mind Over Medicine. I now run a 7 figure business focused primarily on helping individuals alchemize adversity into soul growth so they can align with their spiritual essence and surrender to the Divine — in medicine, in entrepreneurial business, in their personal lives, and in service to humanity.
But then a new challenge arose. Along with the "success "came many opportunities that threatened to seduce me off purpose. That’s part of why Amy and I feel inspired to offer this program. Yes, we want to share with you all the hard lessons we’ve learned along the way about how to run a successful visionary business so you can earn plenty of money doing what you love and serving those who need you. But many others have led programs like that, and we want to go deeper with you.
In addition to helping you thrive in business, we also want to support you in staying aligned with the spiritual service of your purpose and letting your soul run your business, rather than letting your ego make your business decisions. About AMY AHLERS
It was 2007 and I was bursting at the seams ready to give birth to my daughter, Annabella, when I got the call from my literary agent. After years of working on my book, only “good” rejection letters kept coming… good because they liked the concept and me, but bad because there was no book deal to be had. I was broken hearted and defeated.
The word “platform” kept surfacing and I wanted to SCREAM.
After all, I had left the high-paying sales gig to pursue my dream of being a life coach in 2000. I risked it all to go after my vision… but my dreams were growing and I just couldn’t seem to get to that next level. I was making an OK living… but I was exhausted because I was really receiving a glorified hourly wage… in a way I had created another day job trading dollars for hours. I wanted to be of greater service in the world. I wanted to be a published author. I wanted to make a bigger impact. And I wanted to stop traveling so I could be with my soon to be born daughter and sweetie pie husband. I wanted to use the power of the internet to create that pesky platform I kept hearing about. And I wanted to play with the people I admired.
So I made the decision to take a STAND for my vision. I wanted to make a beautiful living impacting tens of thousands of people. I launched Wake-Up Call Coaching in 2009 and COMMITTED myself to building a platform. To learning everything I could about internet marketing in a heart conscious way. And to manifesting making an awesome living following my BLISS.
So I made a huge investment in myself and my learning by taking a course with an internet guru named Ryan Lee (he's actually on this very page as one of our bonus calls). At the time I had no business making an investment in my company, but when I look back that course changed my life. I learned about creating a community by doing a Tele-Seminar Series and felt a resonance. I LOVE interviewing people and really diving into what makes them tick. So I took the idea and went on a run with my Inner Wisdom. She whispered the idea for The Women Masters Tele-Seminar Series and I went home and began to implement. I asked every female luminary I admired to join me and I ended up with amazing women like SARK, Lisa Nichols and Marianne Williamson on the series. We have another vision we both share. After finding each other in the sea of self-help authors and visionaries in the SF Bay Area, we kept “bumping” into each other (thank you Universe!) and ended up in an amazing mastermind group of authors together, we could feel the call to become partners.
You see, from our perspective, many inspired visionaries, like YOU, are in service to the same thing. We’re not quite sure what to call it – the empowered human? The self-actualized person? Source? Anyway, the way we see it, if we can help you serve your mission, we help both ourselves and you because we’re all in service to this bigger vision. When we help you, we serve the mission in a bigger way. The healing force that radiates out of us helps heal the whole freakin’ world.
